Floating and Open Rotation Check Rings

These valves have a free-floating ring not locked to the screw’s rotation. The ring rotates to the degree of drag-force generated during screw rotation from contact between the forward face and the valve body face. The largest amount of abrasion occurs on these surfaces, and the impact of their wear will determine the valve’s lifespan. Abrasion on the outer ring is less damaging because the rotation speed of the ring is generally less than a third of the screw’s overall rotational speed.

Floating and Fixed Rotation Check Rings

Floating and fixed-rotation check rings for injection molding have pins or feet to lock the ring into the feed screw’s rotation. It still has lateral freedom of movement with these rings. The design provides better shot control over open rotation rings, with little wear on the ring or screw tip stud face. Abrasion on the faces is transferred to the outer diameter of the check ring and dictates the useful life of the valve.

Fixed Valves

Fixed valves (also considered ball-check valves) are fixed to the feed screw flow via channels on the inside of the valve with a ball or pin to control flow. These valves provide the best consistency for shot control, but many offer limited flow volumes and can be difficult to purge. With a fixed-rotation screw, the largest wear impact is on the outside diameter, and this wear determines the valve’s lifespan.
